Red Cross First Aid Instructor Development Program
INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS
First Aid & CPR Instructors support the Red Cross First Aid Program through the delivery of our First Aid and CPR courses. Candidates enter our comprehensive Instructor Development Program, designed to prepare them to support dynamic, learner-centered classroom environments.
How Do I Become a Red Cross Instructor?
Before beginning Instructor Training, candidates be 18 years of age and must hold a current participant-level certification in the program they would like to teach.
For example:
- First Aid & CPR Instructor candidates must hold a current Intermediate First Aid & CPR/AED Level C certification.
- Professional Responder Instructor candidates (Basic Life Support/First Responder) must hold the required current participant-level certification for the discipline they would like to teach.
- Psychological First Aid Instructor candidates must hold the required Psychological First Aid participant-level certification.
Once you have the required participant-level certification, the Instructor Development Program involves the following steps:
1. Skills Evaluation
Demonstrate that you have the required first aid and/or program-specific skills before beginning your instructor training.
2. Fundamentals of Instruction
Learn the foundations of teaching, including how to create a positive, engaging and learner-centered classroom environment.
3. Discipline-Specific Training
Learn how to teach the specific Red Cross program you are becoming certified to instruct.
4. Teaching Experience
Complete the required teaching experience to demonstrate your ability to successfully deliver Red Cross course content.
Important – Fundamentals of Instruction
Fundamentals of Instruction is included in our First Aid & CPR Instructor program.
The Professional Responder (BLS/FR) and Psychological First Aid (PFA) Instructor courses listed below are discipline-specific training only. Candidates must have already completed Fundamentals of Instruction before taking either course.
